Mothers

Today, Sunday May 13, we celebrate Mother's Day.

However, before we buy all the gifts (flowers, candy, etc...) let us pause for a moment and reflect on other things!

How many times do we sincerely tell our mothers we love them? I am not talking about the hurried "I love you" said at the end of a phone conversation or in reply to her sincere "I love you!" I am talking about the one said with all our heart, mind, and soul. The one that we would say when we know we will not see her again or the one we say while placing flowers on her grave.

How many times do we show our mothers we care about them? Think about the last time we held the door for her, or helped around the house, or allowed her to sit and relax as we prepared dinner, washed clothes, or took care of someone sick around the house.

How many times do we show our mothers the respect such name invokes? Respect! Now, here is a big word! What is respect? I had to look up the definition to be sure myself, and here is what I have found:

World English Dictionary - Collins
respect  (rɪˈspɛkt)

— n
1.an attitude of deference, admiration, or esteem; regard

How do we treat our mothers? Do we yell at them? Do we tell lies to them? Do we expect them to give us things just because we demand them?

Or....

Do we listen to them and heed their counsel? Do we speak in honesty to them? Do we recognize the wisdom they acquired through challenges, choices, and knowledge gained during their lives?

I saw on Facebook something that pretty much sums up our relationship with our moms:

I realize that in this world we feel some mothers do not honor this name, due to some unknown circumstances. However, even these moms do the best they can under their plight....

And then, there are moms who hold this responsibility sacred and give their whole heart, mind, and might to this lifetime appointment.

I can only hope that those of us younger than 25 will start regarding our moms with the same love and respect we eventually find, many times too late.
